ZMPW Hydraulic Orbital Motor

ZMPW is a gerotor-based orbital hydraulic motor for low-speed, high-torque travel drives on small machinery. It follows the same basic architecture as Danfoss's OMPW line, adapted for lower-cost volume production, and is used mainly for travel wheels on compact rollers, mowers, agricultural carts, and similar equipment where steady torque and simple maintenance matter more than top speed.

If you've had to fit a travel drive into a tight envelope while still needing real torque at low speed, you'll know the usual options don't always work - gear motors and vane motors tend to trade off one for the other. Orbital motors handle this better, and ZMPW is our version built for that job.

The core is a gerotor set. Danfoss has used a similar layout for years in its OMPW line - a rollerless gear ring, spool valve built into the output shaft, cardan shaft doing the driving. ZMPW follows the same basic architecture but was adapted for local production and cost, since the target use case is small machinery built in volume rather than heavy-duty industrial equipment.

Mechanically, it works like most gerotor units: the inner rotor has one fewer tooth than the outer rotor and orbits off-center around the outer rotor's axis. Oil enters through the inlet port, gets trapped in the pockets between the rotor teeth, and those pockets expand and contract as the rotor turns. The pressure difference between the expanding and contracting sides is what generates torque, which then gets carried out through the output shaft. No directional valve, no extra moving parts beyond the rotor set and the shaft - which keeps the failure points down.

What this gets you in practice: decent starting torque even from a dead stop, torque that stays fairly flat across the speed range, and a design that isn't fussy to maintain. It won't spin fast, and it's not meant to. For small travel mechanisms that stop and start a lot under load - think compact rollers, mowers, small ag carts, auxiliary wheels on light construction gear - this is usually the right trade-off.

Cost is the other reason it shows up so often in these applications. A piston motor with comparable torque costs more and is harder to service in the field.

One thing worth checking during selection, beyond the usual displacement and pressure-drop numbers: radial load capacity, specifically how far the load point sits from the mounting flange. That distance affects bearing life directly, and in our experience, bearing wear from radial loading is a more common field issue than problems with the motor's internal parts.
